FAQ

How difficult is it to install Quollix?Quollix can be installed on any device that supports a widely used technology called ‘Docker’, making it largely hardware and operating system independent. Installation requires only a single Docker command on the command line. All server maintenance tasks are done automatically by Quollix in the background.
Is Quollix secure?Quollix is designed with security as a priority, and we have built in extensive protections. See the Threat Model article for details. No system can be guaranteed to be 100% secure, but we use a security-by-design approach and continue improving the platform over time.
How does Quollix compare to Nextcloud?

Nextcloud is primarily an application focused on file storage and collaboration. Quollix, by contrast, is a general-purpose platform for installing and managing multiple applications.

Quollix can be used to run Nextcloud, but also supports many other apps. In addition, it provides common operational features such as updates, backups, and centralized management across installed applications.

How does Quollix compare to Proton?

Quollix and Proton follow fundamentally different approaches.

  • Proton provides privacy-focused, end-to-end encrypted services hosted on Proton’s infrastructure. This gives users strong privacy guarantees with minimal operational effort, but within a fixed hosted product.
  • Quollix focuses on control and portability. It allows users to run and manage their own services, extend the platform with apps, and migrate between hosting models when needed.

In short, Proton is a privacy-focused hosted service, while Quollix is a platform for people who want privacy together with control, extensibility, and the option to self-host.

What hardware do I need to run Quollix?

The processor must be AMD64 (x86-64). Quollix is engineered for resource efficiency and can run comfortably on low-end or legacy systems. Actual requirements depend on the apps you deploy. Check each app’s CPU, memory, and storage needs before sizing your hardware. When in doubt, choose a machine with extra headroom, or opt for explicitly resource-efficient apps in constrained environments.

Some of Quollix’s competitors deploy apps using virtual machines, which require hardware virtualization features like VT-x or AMD-V. These capabilities are sometimes missing in older systems or rented servers. Since Quollix uses Docker instead of virtual machines, it can run on a broader range of hardware without relying on virtualization support.

Why email servers are not supported as official apps?Reliable email delivery depends on external factors outside of our control, such as DNS configuration, IP reputation, and filtering policies of third-party email providers. Large providers may delay, filter, or block emails based on reputation signals that cannot be managed by software alone. Because of this, self-hosting email servers often requires ongoing operational attention beyond application management. To avoid false expectations and ensure a good experience for all users, email servers are not included in our default supported application set. Advanced users who understand these constraints may still choose to run a self-hosted email server at their own discretion.
